August 1778 - Jacob Summett given land grant by Lord Fairfax in Northern Neck of Virginia in Hampshire County, now West Virginia. "The Right Honourable Thomas Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron in that part of Great Britain called Scotland, Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia. To All to whom this present writing shall come sends greeting: Know ye that for good causes for I in Consideration of the Composition to me paid & for the annual Rent hereinafter reserved & have given, granted & confirmed & by these presents for me my heirs & assigns do give grant & confirm unto Jacob Summett of Hampshire County assignee of Henry Louderman a certain tract of waste & ungranted land on Hughe'ss run in the said County, bounded as by a survery thereof made by Richard Rigg_ Beginning at 2 white oaks near the foot of an hill in James Moore's line, Hence along it S-70 E-4 poles & [?] the said run & the course continued 53 poles to 3 pines in the line, Then leaving it N. 35 - E - 142 poles to 2 pines close on the s.side of a valley, Then N 55 -W- 52 poles to 3 pines, Then S.W. 78 poles to 2 pines on the E.side of a very rocky high Ridge, Then N.W. 38 poles to a small pine standing in a pile of stones on the top of the said Ridge, Then N. 87. W. 106 poles to a spanish oak & a white oak on very stony ground in a valley in a line of Somett's land, then along it & [?] the Corner S.38.W. 4 poles & [?] the said Run & the Course Continued 142 poles to a large white oak & a chesnut oakd on the top a very high hill & then S.74.E.166 poles to the Beginning Containing One hundred & fifty-four acres x Together with all Rights, Members & [?] [?] belonging Royal Mines excepted & a full third part of all Lead, Copper, Tin, Coals, Irone Mine & Iron ore that may be found thereon x To have & to hold the said 154 acres of land together with all Rights, Profits & Benefits to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining Except before excepted x To him the said Jacob Summetts his heirs & Assigns forever x He the said Jacob Summetts his heirs & assigns therefore yielding & paying to me my heirs or assigns or to my certain attorney or attornies, agent or agents or to the certain attorney or attornies of my heirs or assigns Proprietors of the Said Northern Neck yearly & every year on the last day of St Michael The Archangel the fee Rent of one shilling sterling money for every fifty acres of land hereby granted & so proportionately for a greater or leser quantity Provided that if the said Jacob Summetts his heirs & assigns shall not pay the said reserved annual Rent as aforesaid so that the same or any part thereof shall be behind & unpaid by the span of two whole years after the same shall become due If legally demanded then it shall & may be lawful got me my heirs or assigns Proprietors as aforesaid My or Their certain attorney or attornies, agent or agents into the above granted premises to re-enter & hold the same so if this land grant never [?] Given at My office in Frederick County under my hand & seal - Dated the 22"- Aug: 1778.
